The Thought Behind It

Bridging centuries of craftsmanship with contemporary design sensibilities, the Ember Perch elevates functional seating to an art form. This high stool represents a thoughtful dialogue between traditional technique and organic structure.

The seat is crafted using the ancient Japanese yakisugi method, where wood is carefully charred to create a distinctive carbonized surface. This process not only yields the dramatic ebony finish that defines each piece, but also naturally enhances the wood’s resistance to moisture, insects, and decay. The controlled burning reveals the timber’s innermost character, emphasizing its grain patterns and creating subtle textural variations unique to each stool.

In striking contrast to the geometric precision of the charred top, the legs emerge as an homage to nature in its purest form. Each leg is a carefully selected natural branch, preserved in its authentic state, complete with subtle curves, variations in thickness, and distinctive bark patterns. These untreated elements provide not only structural stability but also a visual reminder of the material’s origins.

The juxtaposition between the refined, transformed seat and the raw, elemental legs creates a captivating visual tension. This balance between intervention and preservation speaks to a design philosophy that honors both human craftsmanship and natural beauty.

Each Ember Perch is inherently unique. The specific characteristics of the wood, the intensity of the charring process, and the individual qualities of each branch combine to ensure that no two stools are identical. This piece stands as both functional seating and sculptural accent, equally at home in minimal urban apartments, rustic retreats, or professional spaces seeking to make a sophisticated design statement.

The Ember Perch represents more than seating; it embodies a commitment to sustainable materials, traditional techniques, and timeless design principles that transcend fleeting trends.

Where it Begins

Somil Singh makes with a sense of wonder, whether out of curiosity or necessity. For him, working with his hands is not only craft but a way of thinking, a way of uncovering stories hidden in wood, metal, and discarded objects awaiting a second life.

Trained first in electronics and engineering, Somil discovered his true direction in furniture design at the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, where he found the joy of shaping material into meaning.

His practice draws on woodworking, whittling, carving, repairing, and recycling as acts of care that lend the old and ordinary a renewed presence. Precision and play sit side by side in his work, influenced equally by the patience of craft and the imaginative energy of anime.

Whether carving wood, sketching prototypes, or exploring digital tools, Somil approaches making as a conversation between material and maker, function and feeling, tradition and possibility.
