The Thought Behind It

Midnight Lattice is a sculptural wall piece that explores absence, depth, and repetition. Made in ceramic and finished in a deep black glaze, the central surface features a recurring lattice motif drawn from traditional Indian jaali work. Each cut-out curve is carefully hand-carved, some filled, some left open, suggesting both structure and erosion. A single scalloped border arcs across one side, skimming the edge like a half-remembered threshold.

The layered ceramic form rests within a shallow tray of woven bamboo, a quiet contrast of matte and weave. A single curved brass rod lies diagonally across the base, catching glints of light and offering a minimal, metallic counterpoint. Together, these textures – black clay, pliant fibre, and cool copper – speak of restraint and rhythm.

Crafted at Studio Karamica in the lower reaches of the Dhauladhar range, this piece is part of a continuing exploration of time-worn form and contemporary materiality. It draws the eye in slowly, asking the viewer to look closely, to read between negative spaces. Midnight Lattice is not only an artwork—it is a quiet gesture, a mood, a pause in motion. A fitting presence for alcoves, corridors, or spaces that welcome a sense of slow clarity.
