The Thought Behind It
This refined ink and watercolour composition by Bharath Vaidyanathan immortalises the architectural grandeur of Mumbai’s celebrated Crawford Market (formally Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Market) through sophisticated black ink delineation juxtaposed with radiant amber watercolor. The artwork captures the market’s neo-Gothic splendor with meticulous precision—from the distinguished clock tower with its ornate spire to the rhythmic progression of rounded arches that define this colonial-era landmark.
Bharath’s disciplined hand reveals the building’s architectural sophistication through carefully articulated details: the half-timbered upper façade, the elegant arcaded walkways, and the harmonious proportions characteristic of late 19th-century municipal architecture. The foreground presents a tableau of urban vitality with Mumbai’s quintessential black and yellow taxis arranged in thoughtful composition against the monumental structure.
What elevates this artwork to distinction is the masterful contrast between the finely executed monochromatic architectural study and the sublime golden wash illuminating the sky. This chromatic interplay creates a contemplative atmosphere while accentuating the building’s commanding silhouette against the ethereal backdrop.
The piece achieves a delicate equilibrium between historical reverence and contemporary interpretation, capturing both the architectural significance and the quotidian energy of this Mumbai landmark. Available as museum-quality reproductions in three thoughtfully proportioned dimensions on either archival paper or artist-grade canvas, preserving the nuanced interplay of ink precision and watercolor luminosity found in the original work.

Of the Artist
Work and holidays take Bharath to places far and wide and there is much drama and emotion in boardrooms and markets. As an artist, he revels in all of it. Be it chaotic city streets, vibrant festivals, mesmerizing architecture, or just the quaint house down the road, India and the world always fascinates. When one pauses for a moment to soak in the frame, it translates into sheer beauty! One may not actively seek it but acknowledging it when it hits you, sometimes even just momentarily, is a gift to be cherished or well… painted.
Acrylic, watercolour, pen/ink and gouache are his mediums of choice. For over ten years now, Bharath has been exhibiting and shipping his paintings across the world. Some of his most enjoyable work have been custom painting engagements where he builds a painting after weeks of conversation with clients on what they want expressed.
